Women's Day : Reminiscing with Gratitude.

Women's Day : Reminiscing with Gratitude...
On the eve of International Women's Day a very respected senior sent me one of my pictures with the comment ' balloon of energy'.
I had once read somewhere that the balloon flies not because of the air outside but because of the air inside it...

I took a close at the picture which had been taken during the most memorable of the events of my life- ‘Women’s Marathon’ organised by Nagpur District Administration last year.

The third wave of Covid had been receding and things were falling back into a routine when the thought of organizing an exclusive event for mothers and daughters as a Women's Marathon came to my mind. It flashed like a huge event so even before discussing it with my team I felt it was important to get a green signal from the police. I shared the thought with the Deputy Commissioner of Police and the Commissioner of Police who endorsed the idea and offered their full support.
A spate of meetings were held thereafter with all the concerned  departments including the Zila Parishad,  Municipal Corporation, Education and Sports department.

I still remember the kind of response the proposal received when I suggested that we could plan it as an event for approximately fifty thousand women. There was a lot of apprehension in every one's mind. However, the then Hon’ble Guardian Minister and Minister for Energy , Dr.Nitin Raut encouraged me and post that there was no looking back.

It's very heartening to recall how each and every officer and their teams put forth the best foot to make the Women’s marathon a historic success. The spirited support of all line departments the PWD, Traffic, Health, Publicity and Sports department played a huge role in arranging logistics on the ground as well as digitally to facilitate organizing an event of such magnitude meticulously.

In a matter of just five days everything was rolling. The event had a ten kilometers run, a five kilometers run and a dream run of just two kilometers for mothers and daughters with good prizes including an E scooter for the winner in the ten kilometers category.
My team of revenue officers,  the Resident Deputy Collector,  Sub-divisonal Officers, Tahsildars, Naib Tahsildars,  Circle Officers and Talathis played their role with dedication to make it a success. They also appealed on behalf of administration to  corporates for sponsorships which added to the grandeur of the  event.
An impossible deadline and a shoe string budget was the cause of worry for many. However registrations kept increasing and on the D Day more than twenty  thousand were registered on website.
The magical support from all including the print and electronic media made us fully prepared and we were set for the event which was planned a week after 8th March.
The theme , ' Break the Bias' was set to  beautiful lyrics by Ms.Monica Saluja from Panipat with lilting music by Vikas Relhan of Kurukshetra. I also received guidance from Ms. Sumedha Kataria,  Retired IAS , Haryana who had the experience of organizing the Panipat Pinkathon, the largest Women's Marathon till date in our country.
The event was to be presided by the the Honble Guardian Minister in the presence of then Honble Minister for Sports and the then Chairperson of the Zilla Parishad. The local Members of Parliament and Members of the Legislative Assembly had promised to be there.

I was keeping my fingers crossed with silent  prayers in my heart for success of the event.  The concern regarding the  response at starting point  Kasturchand Park was making my heart beat faster than usual.  I reached there early and saw a steady stream of participants rolling in even as we began the energising Zumba with gym trainer Gaurish and Fitness Expert, Madhumita.
The unique blend of folk and cultural music with fitness dance had everyone tapping to the tunes.
By the time the first event of ten kilometers began the crowd kept surging. The ten kilometers run was flagged of by the dignitaries at the expected time. After about fifteen minites, the five kilometers was flagged off too and took off smoothly.

A sea of mothers and daughters walked in for the dream run which was converted to a walk to avoid injury.
By the end of it all the women were happy and  glowing . As for me I could never figure out how I managed to sustain my energy and live it all.
When I ponder over it now , I realise that I was a balloon of energy not because what was outside but what was inside me.
The strength which I had was not my own but the strength of my team.
This Women's Marathon was certainly an example of administrative strength with the total support of the government and the Hon’ble Ministers.
As I looked at another of my pics from the event  with my hands raised in joyful abundance, I realised that behind this smile were the sweat and tears of my parents, the confidence and trust they reposed in me and the unflinching support of my siblings, partner, husband, son, family, friends and colleagues.
Truly can any one be successful without support of another? Have men become successful without women in their lives?
This Women's Day let us not shy in asking for support.  Let us reach out to one another , let us be there for each other whether as man or woman.
For as Hellen Keller has said , Alone we can do so little and together we  can do so much....

Thirupaavai : Andal Devi's Fifth Pasuram : Mysterious Krishna, The Lord of Mathura, Our Saviour...

Thirupaavai :  Andal Devi's Fifth Pasuram : Mysterious Krishna, The Lord of Mathura, Our Saviour...

Today is the fifth day of the divine month of Marghazhi and Andal Devi is fully immersed in singing praises to Lord Krishna.
I was amazed by the diversity of her thoughts in the fifth paasuram. On the one hand she describes Lord Krishna as Maayan, the mysterious,  who ruled over Mathura and on the other she elucidates his playful pranks on the river Yamuna as a member of the cowherd clan. She also depicts his dual role as the light in Yashoda's life and as a prankster whom she punished by tying him with  a rope due to which he is known as Damodar, the one with a mark on his body.
The highlight however is her words of wisdom which guide us to think of Lord Krishna either by offering flowers or chanting his glories and meditating on him with an assurance that He would exonerate us of any sin which we may have committed knowingly or unknowingly.
In short, all our obstacles will be burnt to ashes and we will achieve salvation thanks to His Divine grace.
The expanse of Saint poet Andal's  thought in the fifth pasuram is mind blowing.  Based in Srivilliputtur, a remote town near Madurai in Tamilnadu her verse extends to far North in Mathura revealing the mystique of a Bhakta. So even as she describes Lord Krishna as mysterious we realise that Andal Devi was no less than an enigma.

Uttaman and third pasuram of Thiruppavai...

Uttaman and third pasuram of Thiruppavai...

Andal, the revered saint poet from Tamilnadu has composed the 'Thirupaavai' comprising of thirty verses which have immmortalised her bhakti for Lord Krishna or Ranganathan.
A hymn is devoted to each day in the Tamil month of Marghazhi leading the bhaktas to salvation. Andal was one among the twelve Azhwaars who dedicated their lives to Sri Vaishnavism
The third day of Margazhi today presents Lord Krishna as the Supreme, the Uttaman who in the avatar of a dwarf conquered the three worlds. Andal propagates total surrender like Lord Mahabali who did not hesitate to offer his head for the third step to Lord Vishnu.
The hymn beautifully puts for the point that when we surrender ourselves to Krishna there will be abundance and prosperity.
The Rain Gods would be generous leading to good yields. Nature would be bountiful with water for the fish and honey for the bees in the blooming flowers. Milch cows would yield plenty of milk. In short their devotion to Lord Krishna would bring them unbridled prosperity.
The three steps taken by Lord Vishnu embody our physical world, the mental world and our ego or individuality. Mahabali's surrender of his head symbolises giving up of our egos at the feet of the Lord leading to our salvation.
This is what Andal extols to her friends and bhaktas in the third verse of the Thiruppavai -
"Ongi ulagalanda uthaman per paadi
Naangal nam paavaiku chaatri neeradinaal
Theenginri nadellaam thingal mummaari peidu
Ongu peru sennal oodu kayal ugala
Poomkuvalaip podhil porivandu kannpaduppa
Thengaade pukkirundu seertha mulai patri
Vaangak kudam niraikkum vallal perum pasukkal
Neengade selvam niraindhuel or em paavaai."

Beauty in the ordinary and Vandana Krishna's 'Flight of Fantasy'...

Beauty in the ordinary and Vandana Krishna's 'Flight of Fantasy'....

It had been a long day with a visit to the doctor, a workshop on socio-economic paradigms in urban development,  brainstorming over economic empowerment of women, talking about elimination of violence against women to employees of Federal Bank.
As I stepped out of office at about 6.30 pm, I could see Mantralay, the stately headquarters of Government of Maharashtra standing tall against the dusky sky.
I walked down the steps of the new administrative building and headed to take another Flight of Fantasy, at the solo exhibition of paintings by Vandana Krishna.
Most people would know her as a senior bureaucrat in the Maharashtra cadre of the Indian Administrative Service. Some may even know that she is melodious singer but most wouldn't know that she is an amazing artist.
I too wouldn't have known had I not got this opportunity to visit her solo exhibition of paintings at Hall no.4, of the renowned Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai.
Of whatever little I understand in art there were times when frequenting  art galleries was therapeutic however pressures of work and family and distance to the city doused that fire.
As I stepped into the gallery that  familiar flicker was rekindled. It got converted into a flame as I went through the beautiful paintings made by Ms. Vandana Krishna. By the time I saw all the paintings it was a raging fire of emotions.
For this was no routine Flight of Fantasy, the paintings were sublime art each depicting a different mood and embellished with sensitivity.
It was as if her 'Boats on the Ganges' took me on a ride 'Towards the Light'.
As I took 'The Leap'  to 'Reach for the Stars' I found that she was  'Fearless' in expressing her emotions.  In fact she left us 'Floating Free' to experience the 'Stillness' and the 'Storm' or 'Fly with the wind'. So you could be on 'Evening Stroll' or taking the 'Stride' getting wet in a 'Drizzle' or 'Flying Free'. One could feel mushy 'Head over Heels' with the 'Pinks' drenched in 'Forest Mist' lost in your 'Dreams' only to be awakened maybe at ' 3 a.m '.
And then her paintings make you sit up and experience another world where the desire for our perfect, ' Elevation' are bashfully inconsiderate about that man sitting on the ledge at the cost of his life. Many evenings of our helpers are lost in 'The Dusk' as they light up our lives.
And we are left to ponder, do the 'Urban Heights' of our 'Maximum City' really 'Mirror' their lives?
There is so much more to find among her paintings.  So walk into the ' Sunset',  take 'The Leap' or ' 'Plunge' and 'Deep Dive'  you will only ' Reach for the Stars'...

P.S. The exhibition is on till 27th November 2022 , 11 am to 7 p.m at Jehangir Art Gallery, Exhibition Hall no.4, Kala Ghoda. Also Vandana Krishna's Permanent Collection can be seen at  'Si Bambai' Kala Ghoda.
The words in ' apostrophe' are titles of her paintings....

The Circle of Life...

The circle of life...

Life is beautiful,  a gift given to us by God to add beauty to this world. Yet very often we find people getting fed of life, saying that life is boring or has been unfair to them. Some of them who are more unreasonable feel suicidal and some even take the extreme step of ending their lives.
It is very difficult to know the thoughts in each person's mind. Plus some are expressive and some rarely speak out or share their thoughts.
Often times life is not easy specially for the common man. Indeed they have to struggle on many fronts,  maybe for a house, for money or for their education. At times one's health is a cause for concern more so if afflicted by a serious ailment. Property feuds, family fights,  misunderstandings galore cause heartburn for some. End of relationship due to break up or sudden death of a loved one leads to great imbalance in some people's lives. And what about those who face racial and other kinds of discrimination and are often bullied shoving them into feelings of hopelessness? Covert shaming, disdain and backbiting cause mental disturbances.
Some are conscious enough to vent out their feelings and get support. Some muster enough courage and strength to wade through. Others just clam up leading to further dejection and break down of self esteem.
Agreed that the world appears unfair and evil at times but legends say that ultimately the good prevails over the evil. What goes up comes down and each night ends with a beautiful dawn. One just has to hang on to hope even if at the brink of breakdown because life is a circle and a beautiful one. Those of us who have seen the film, Lion King will know how Simba understood the concept of 'Circle of Life' from Mufasa, the father lion.
Perhaps it's theme song conveys it all-
"It's the Circle of Life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the Circle
The Circle of Life."
So lets hold on to life and experience this circle through its ups and downs,  lows and highs.
As far as we are within the radius of life and manage ourselves in it's circumference we shall certainly be able to figure out all the angles and work out the pie r squares. So cheer up and never let your sunny side be down...

When Sorrow Walks in During Celebration...

When Sorrow Walks in  During Celebration... Some days arrive with unexpected sorrows. I was getting ready for the ninth day of Ganesh Utsav...
